- Plant of the family Compositae, with about
- 200 species. There are many cultivated
- varieties but some uncertainty as to the wild
- species from which they have been evolved. In
- the Far East the common chrysanthemum has
- been cultivated for more than 2,000 years,
- and is the national emblem of Japan. The
- ox-eye daisy Leucanthemum vulgare, now placed
- in a closely related genus to the
- chrysanthemum, and the corn marigold
- Chrysanthemum segetum are common weeds in
- Britain. Chrysanthemums may be grown from
- seed, but are more usually reproduced by
- cutting or division. They were introduced to
- England in 1789.
